Story:

Chess lives in the majestic land of Rownland. The smallest of the Royal Islands of Eurica. With the famous grassy hills, enchanted woods, and worship of nature, it was a paradise for him and his friends. He grew up in one of the smallest, oldest villages in the country: Oldhills Town.

Chess had always been a quiet, unusually mature person. Even as a child. One day, in Kindergarten, he was choking on a piece of apple after getting bumped into. Spade, another kindergartener, gave him the Heimlich maneuver and dislodged the apple. Grateful to the social, fun-loving, violent skinned naturman boy, the two quickly became best friends. Their contradicting personalities gave them a sense of balance in their lives and their kindness and loyalty towards each other grew stronger as the years went by.

It wasn't long until Chess's mom gave birth to a girl, giving him a little sister named Nari. Sadly, though his life seemed to be going perfectly with a wonderful family and good friends, one day, it all changed forever.

On a dark, stormy night, at the age of 10, synapsian bandits raided Chess's village. The bandits charged up the path to his home and attacked him, his sister, and his mother. His father was away in another village spending time with friends. When Chess's mother tried to fight against the bandits to protect her daughter, she was stabbed in the back from behind twice. The bandits then knocked Chess unconscious when he tried to help his mom.

By the time he woke up, his mother had died from blood loss. His sister was still alive, but badly wounded. Since the death of his wife, Chess's father slowly became a bitter, pessimistic, serious person who used combat training to relieve himself of his grief. Chess did not blame his father for changing. He sympathized with him and never showed any sadness when scolded.

Two years later, Chess and Nari went out to find a special kind of mushroom said to illuminate in pitch darkness. Chess did not want to go, but his sister so desperately wanted it he agreed to accompany her. During their search, they came face to face with a mother owl bear and her cubs. Suffering from a frenzied, hunger driven rage, the beast attacked them. Chess carried his sister on his back and fled, but the bear was too quick and snatched Nari off his back. As she screamed in terror, Chess tried to save her but was struck in the head by the owl bear's mighty paw. He was instantly knocked out cold from the blow. Minutes later, he regained just enough consciousness to hear the pained, suffering cries of his younger sister as she was being mauled and eaten by the beast. He tried to get up, but he was too disoriented. Knowing he failed his sister, he closed his eyes, accepting death.

Hours later, Chess woke up in the Oldhills medical clinic. He had been found by the Guardians. An elite group of warriors whose purpose was to preserve and protect the people of Rownland and all of nature. They told Chess they saved him, but his sister had been killed.

Distraught over losing two of his loved ones in so little time, Chess silently swore to never be too weak to protect those precious to him again. Alongside his father, he began training to one day be a guardian himself. Though Spade warns him the guardian training could strengthen him physically, but damage him emotionally, Chess was too broken from the loss of his mother and sister to care about himself. He wanted to protect those close to him even if it meant getting hurt himself.

One day, however, a new person came into his life. Venturing to the forbidden flat grasslands known as the Turfs, he witnessed the citizens of the city of Edona preparing to sacrifice a young naturman woman to the Terrazar. The Terrazar was a carnivorous plant being that maintained the lavish lands and lifestyle of the people of Edona. The citizens, known as Edonians, sacrificed a person to it once every year to appease it.

Chess approached for a better look and saw the beautiful natruman girl was about his age and was crying. Though it was forbidden to meddle in the ways of the Edonians, Chess attacked the crowd and freed the girl from her binds. He led her to his village, and she thanked him for saving her. She introduced herself as Usini, and Chess welcomed her to his village, much to his father's and most of the villagers' dismay and disapproval.

Chess stayed close to Usini for a long time when she first arrived at the village. They talked a lot about their lives and developed a strong bond. One night, on the anniversary of the day they met, they fell asleep in the town's orchard together. After that night, they began to fall in love.

Since then, Chess slowly began to realize the importance of healthy emotions and being happy. With guidance from his friends and allies, he continues to heal his emotional scars and revitalize his spirit.

Powers and Abilities:

Chess's melee combat skills are well above average thanks to his guardian training. He is also a lot tougher and can handle more damage than most. Like many naturman warriors, he wields a weapon. His great mace has a diamond-like, spiked head that can easily crush boulders. The saw-like sides can disarm opponents when weapons clash.

Chess wields the summer variant of the earth element. It is colored emerald and lime green. He can summon great variations of energy such as flails, whips, bombs, and shields. Like many highly skilled earth elementals, he also has the ability to manipulate actual earth such as rocks and soil. He cannot control wood and foliage, however. That power lies in the nature element.

While Chess's power is tremendous, his speed is about average level. He focuses more on strength and skill than speed and agility.

One of Chess's favorite pastimes is meditating outdoors. When listening to the sounds of rustling leaves, grass, and plants while meditating, he can have visions of the spirits of the land. This allows him to feel the overall feelings and health of his homeland. This spiritual ability is called the Green Ear.

Personality

Known for always being very mature, Chess rarely smiles or laughs and takes most things seriously. He deeply cares about his loved ones and always loves to have a good, fun, relaxing time with them.

Though he is serious and mature, he is by no means blunt or emotionless. His feelings do not show on the surface much. He finds being too expressive uncomfortable and tries to keep calm and stay composed the best he can. If needed, however, he will allow his emotions to show fully.

Extra Facts:

Chess has a deep fear of bears due to the trauma of his sister's death. He often still has nightmares of hearing her screams as she was killed.

The black rings around Chess's top eyelids formed from his emotional trauma. They are known as the 'rings of pain,' and are common in those who suffer terrible sadness or anger in their lives.
